How do you create an interactive play object that connects fun and movement with awareness of energy consumption?
Since the mid-1990s, renewal of the Bijlmermeer has been underway; As part of the completion of this renewal in the F-neighborhood, the City of Amsterdam's Zuidoost district decided to realize the first BLOX playground as a pilot.

BLOX encourages young and old to move and play together. The value of energy, which in a circular world is much more than just the kWh price, can be taught early through BLOX. Awareness at a young age is vital for circular thinking (and acting) in the future.

For and by local residents
BLOX were created through a creative participation project with neighborhood residents. In this way, neighborhood residents became part project owners in the development of a new play environment around their corner.
BLOX connects fun and movement with the digital world. The main goal of BLOX is to bring children, adolescents and adults and seniors to play together, fun for all and vitality through movement through the presence of game prompting, invitation and competition.

The interactive play object consists of several components. The BLOX input elements generate energy through movement. The output elements convert the generated energy into play forms. BLOX thus fulfills an educational role and brings the digital world into the public domain.
In addition, the architectural design of the BLOX elements creates a positive impact on the appearance of the neighborhood.

BLOX can also provide indirect awareness regarding the consumption of energy. This is in line with the joint ambition of the parties involved to develop the BLOX playground sustainably, inspired by the principle of eco-effective development (Cradle-to-Cradle thinking).
Blox was developed in collaboration with residents of the F-neighborhood, Stadsdeel Zuidoost, Ymere, Stichting DOEN and Spereco.
