BLOX is an innovative outdoor playground as well as a sustainable solution for public space architecture. REGGS pro-actively started this project driven by our ambition to use design innovation for enhancing social interaction between people from different cultures and ages. Looking at a playground, you see a lot of fun, but we also see a lot of energy that could be harvested and re-used.
Our design team created BLOX, a group of objects on which you can play and generate energy. This energy is translated in simple ‘digital’ games presented by a led grid, bringing the digital world outdoors. Who generates the most energy? Who pulls the ‘digital’ rope the hardest? Stimulating people to move, enjoy the outdoors, interact with neighbours, whilst fighting obesity. Everyone can play together with BLOX objects, from 5-year-olds to seniors.
For this project REGGS engineered a highly efficient generator that fits the frequencies and torque of people moving on the BLOX objects. The local community in Amsterdam is using BLOX extensively, creating a meeting area, where people have fun and hopefully contemplate energy consumption. Connecting play with sustainability for all ages!
BLOX is an original innovation from REGGS: ideated, designed and engineered by our interdisciplinary project team. It was made possible in cooperation with the residents of the F-neighborhood in Amsterdam, the local government, Ymere, Stichting DOEN and Spereco.
